Counseling Services

Qualifications:  I hold a Masters of Arts degree, Suma Cum Laude, in Mental Health Counseling from Amridge University, formerly Southern Christian University, in Montgomery, Alabama and am licensed through the State of Florida Department of Health as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.  I obtained my Bachelors of Arts degree in Criminology, Cum Laude, from the University of South Florida.  Certifications in Family and Dependency Law were granted to me by the Supreme Court of the State of Florida, through the USF Conflict Resolution Collaborative, under the training of Dr. Gregory Firestone.  My Circuit Civil Certification was obtained through Mediation Training Group at Nova Southeastern University.  I have also received certified training as a Parenting Coordinator through USF Conflict Resolution Collaborative.  In 2007, I received certification as a Subject Path Specialist, through the All Kinds of Minds Institute and provide a unique assessment process to aid students in identifying the neuro-developmental constructs that can promote or hinder their ability to successfully perform in the classroom.

Experience:  My Masters practicum and clinical internship was under the supervision of Dr. Kevin VanKorlaar, and conducted through the Polk County School Board by providing mental health counseling to qualifying students, elementary through high school, in the ESE program during the 2006-2007 academic school year, as well as serving as a Campus Counselor at Southeastern University under the supervision of Lucinda C. West, LMHC, LMFT, in Lakeland, Florida.  I have also contracted through the Department of Juvenile Justice to conduct psychological evaluations for at-risk youth to determine appropriate placement in a residential treatment facility.  From 1998 to 2002, I served the State of Florida as an adult felony probation officer with the Department of Corrections.  Currently I am a counselor in private practice as well as on referral with Highland Park Church of the Nazarene.   My work with Mediation & Counseling Consultants, in Winter Haven, Florida, includes serving as a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator, functioning as a neutral third party, helping to facilitate a mutual agreement between parties, concerning the outcome of their decision to dissolve their marriage and as a Parent Coordinator and Facilitator helping couples work through the parenting issues they face after a divorce.  As a Social Investigator, I am court appointed to determine the best interests of the children with regard to their primary caretaker.

Nature of Counseling:  Counseling provides the opportunity for growth and self-discovery in the context of a safe, supportive, and therapeutic relationship.  Theoretically, I most often think in terms of systems and use a family therapy model for treatment.  What that means is that we may collaboratively identify how your family of origin impacts or has impacted your feelings and behaviors.  I also utilize elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy; we will look at your thought patterns, feelings, and actions, and how they affect your daily life.  My approach is holistic and goal-oriented.  We will identify goals you want to meet and then work together to develop the best strategies for you to achieve those goals.  I am a professionally trained counselor and licensed through the State of Florida as a Mental Health Therapist.  However, I am a Christian by faith and offer faith-based counseling services at your request.  I conduct all counseling sessions in English or with a translator for whom you arrange and pay.  I do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical disability.  If significant differences, such as in culture or belief system exist between us, I will work to understand those differences.
